Al-Sultan of Kelantan

The state of Kelantan is among the oldest state in Malaysia, can trace it history since the era of Majapahit Empire. The state falls into the Malacca Sultanate in 1499. Following the falls of Malacca in 1511, the state separates into several principalities, for example, Kelantan Utara (Jembal), Kelantan – Pattani and Kelantan Selatan. In 1760, the state is unified and in 1764, Long Yunus proclaimed himself as the Raja of Kelantan. In 1800, Long Muhammad declared himself as Sultan of Kelantan. Officially, the Sultan of Kelantan is styled as :-

Below is the list of the Sultan of Kelantan since 1900.


SULTAN MUHAMMAD IV
(1900 - 1920)

Sultan Muhammad IV is the 24th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 23rd May 1870. He is the eldest son of Sultan Muhammad III by his first wife, Tengku Ampuan Sofia binti Tengku Puteh. He was granted the title as Tengku Sri Indra on 23rd September 1890 and granted the title of Phaya Deja by the King of Siam in 1897. He was appointed as Raja Muda of Kelantan on 25th July 1898. He succeeded the throne on the death of his uncle on 17th June 1899. He is installed as HH Raja and Yang di-pertuan Kelantan on 9th February 1900. He was granted the title as Phaya Bipitpakdi by the King of Siam in 1900.

Kelantan was transferred to British Protection on 19th July 1909. He was officially crowned as HRH Sultan Muhammad IV on 22nd June 1911. Kelantan is known as Negeri Kelantan Darul Naim in 1916. He ruled Kelantan for 20 years. He died at Kota Bharu on 23rd December 1920.


SULTAN ISMAIL I
(1920 - 1944)

Sultan Ismail I is the 25th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 20th August 1890. He is the eldest son of Sultan Muhammad IV by his first wife, Sultana Zainab binti Nik Wan Muhammad Amin. He was granted the title as Tengku Sri Jaya Raja and promoted to Tengku Sri Indra Mahkota on 11th March 1901. He was granted the title as Phra Rattasadana Adipati Putra by the King of Siam in 1901. He was appointed as the Heir Apparent with the title Raja Kelantan on 22nd June 1911. He succeeded the throne on the death of his father on 23rd December 1920. He was officially crowned as the Sultan of Kelantan at Istana Balai Besar on 28th April 1921. He ruled Kelantan for 24 years. He died from tuberculosis at Kota Bharu on 20th June 1944.


SULTAN IBRAHIM
(1944 - 1960)

Sultan Ibrahim is the 26th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 9th October 1897. He is the second son of Sultan Muhammad IV by his first wife, Sultana Zainab binti Nik Wan Muhammad Amin. He was granted the title as Tengku Sri Indra Mahkota on 22nd June 1911. He was appointed as the Heir Apparent with the title Raja Kelantan on 21st April 1921. He succeeded the throne on the death of his elder brother on 21st June 1944. He was officially crowned as the Sultan of Kelantan at Istana Balai Besar on 25th October 1944. He ruled Kelantan for 16 years. He died from cerebral haemorrhage at Kota Bharu on 9th July 1960.


SULTAN YAHYA PETRA
(1960 - 1979)

Sultan Yahya Petra is the 27th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 10th December 1917. He is the second son of Sultan Ibrahim by his third wife, Che Embong binti Daud. He was raised by his uncle, Sultan Ismail I ibni Sultan Muhammad IV. He was granted the title as Tengku Temenggong Kelantan on 21st July 1939 and was promoted to Tengku Bendahara Kelantan on 6th February 1945. He was appointed as Heir Apparent after his elder brother, Tengku Abdullah ibni Sultan Ibrahim was removed from the line of succession on 30th November 1947. He was granted the title as Tengku Mahkota Kelantan on 1st February 1948. He succeeded the throne on the death of his father on 9th July 1960. He was officially crowned as Sultan of Kelantan at Istana Balai Besar on 17th July 1961.

He became the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 22nd July 1970. Later, he was installed as Yang di-Pertuan Agong (The Supreme Ruler) of Malaysia on 21st September 1975. He ruled Kelantan for 19 years. He died from Heart Failure at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur on 29th March 1979.


SULTAN ISMAIL PETRA
(1979 - 2010)

Sultan Ismail Petra is the 28th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 11th November 1949. He is the eldest son of Sultan Yahya Petra by his first wife, Raja Perempuan Zainab binti Tengku Muhammad Petra. He was installed as the heir apparent with the title as Tengku Mahkota Kelantan on 11th November 1967. He served as Regent of Kelantan in the absence of his father in July 1974, August 1975 and from 21st September 1975 until 29th March 1979. He succeeded the throne on the death of his father on 29th March 1979. He was officially crowned as Sultan of Kelantan on 30th March 1980. He ruled Kelantan for 31 years.

After the State constitution amendment gazette 22nd July 2010, He was formally deposed in favour of his eldest son by the Kelantan Royal Succession Council of State, on the grounds of incapacity after failing to fully recover from a debilitating stroke on 13th September 2010. Currently, he is styled as “Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Ismail Petra”.


SULTAN MUHAMMAD V
(2010 - present)

Tengku Muhammad Faris

Sultan Muhammad V is the 29th Sultan of Kelantan. He was born on 6th October 1969. He is the eldest son of Sultan Ismail Petra by his first wife, Raja Perempuan Tengku Anis binti Tengku Abd Hamid. He was appointed as Heir Apparent with the title Tengku Mahkota Kelantan on 30th March 1979. He was appointed as Regent behalf on his incapacitated father after he suffered a serious stroke on 24th May 2009. He is proclaimed as the Sultan of Kelantan and styled as “Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Sri Sultan Muhammad V” at Istana Balai Besar on 13th September 2010.

In the 226th Conference of Ruler meeting on 14th October 2011, he was elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for 5-year term starting effectively on December 13, 2011.
