In prior of 1884, the ruler of Pahang is styled as Bendahara of Pahang. Below is the list of modern Ruler of Pahang since 1884.
SULTAN AHMAD MUAZZAM SHAH
(1884 - 1909)
HRH Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah was the first ruler of Pahang to assume the title Sultan. Previously, the ruler of Pahang was styled as Bendahara of Pahang. Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah was born at Pulau Maulana, Pekan on 22nd April 1836. He was the third son of Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Ali by his second wife, Che Long. He assumed the title as Bendahara Sri Wak Raja on 1858. He assumed the title as Bendahara Sri Maharaja after conquered Pahang on 10th June 1863.
He proclaimed as the Sultan of Pahang in 1881 and officially installed as Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Sri Baginda Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah on 25th September 1884. His position is officially recognized by the British in 1887. During his reign, Pahang entered the Treaty of Federation and formed the Federated Malay States in 1895. He abdicated due to old age in favour of his first son in 1909. He ruled Pahang for 25 years. He died in 1914.
SULTAN MAHMUD SHAH
(1909 - 1917)
HRH Sultan Mahmud Shah is the second Sultan of Pahang. He was born as Tun Long Mahmud on 4th February 1868. He was the first son of Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah by his second wife, Che Ungku Pah bt Dato Temenggung Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim. He was appointed as Pemangku Raja (Regent of Pahang) on 22nd July 1889 and appointed as Tengku Besar (heir apparent title at that time) on 11th October 1891. He succeeded the throne after the abdication of his father on 13th April 1909 due to old age. He ruled Pahang for 8 years.
SULTAN ABDULLAH AL-MU’TASIM BILLAH SHAH
(1917 - 1932)
HRH Sultan Abdullah is the third Sultan of Pahang. He was born on 12th October 1874 at Royal Palace, Pekan Lama, Pahang. He was the third son of Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah by his third wife, Che Kusuma. He inherited the Pahangian Throne upon the death of his elder brother on 19th June 1917. He ruled Pahang for 15 years.
SULTAN ABU BAKAR RIAYATUDDIN AL-MUAZZAM SHAH
(1932 - 1974)
HRH Sultan Abu Bakar is the fourth Sultan of Pahang. He was born on 29th May 1904 at Istana Hinggap, Pekan Lama, Pahang. He was the second son of Sultan Abdullah Al-Mu’tasim Billah Shah by his second wife, HH Tunku Kalsum bt Tunku Abdullah. He was appointed as the Crown Prince of Pahang on 4th June 1930. He succeeded as the Sultan of Pahang upon the death of his father on 23rd June 1932. During the Japanese Occupation, he secretly supported the operations of “Force 136”. He ruled Pahang for 42 years.
SULTAN AHMAD SHAH AL-MUZTA’IN BILLAH
(1974 - present)
HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah is the fifth and incumbent Sultan of Pahang today. He was born on 24th October 1930 at Istana Mangga Tunggal, Pekan, Pahang. He was the second son of Sultan Abu Bakar by his first wife, HRH Raja Fatimah. He was appointed as the Crown Prince of Pahang on 25th May 1944. Upon the death of his father, he was proclaimed as the Sultan of Pahang on 7th May 1974. He was installed as The Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia on 30th March 1979. He returned to ruled Pahang since 26th April 1984.
