His Royal Highness the Raja (King) of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail consent to deliver the Royal Education Award of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in a ceremony held at Istana Arau, Perlis. The 4 recipients of the royal award were :-
- Ramanathan Tiagarajan, 22
- Nur Izzati binti Amir Hamzah, 24
- Karen Voon Kai Rou, 24
- Mohammad Rahim bin Kamaluddin, 24

Present at the ceremony were Her Royal Highness the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Fauziah binti Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid; His Royal Highness the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail; Her Royal Highness the Raja Puan Muda (Crown Princess) of Perlis, Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil. Also attending the ceremony were the Vice Chancellor of USM, Prof Datuk Dr. Omar Osman and Chairman of USM's Board of Director, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr. M Zawawi Ismail.
