HISTORY
The Royal House of Kedah is of great antiquity, originating in the Hindu age, and said to have been founded by a Prince from Sri Lanka. Eight generations of the family ruled over the state before the conversion to Islam in 1136. The state frequently fell to superior Siamese forces. Fearing another such invasion, Sultan Abdullah al-Mukarram Shah negotiated a Treaty of Friendship and Alliance with the HEIC in 1786, this entailed the cession of Pinang. The Siamese were forestalled for a time, but struck hard in 1821 and annexed the sultanate. After a severe financial crisis, Kedah was transferred to British sovereignty on 16th July 1909.
The then Sultan, Ahmad Taj ud-din III al-Mukarram Shah, had already reigned for 27 years and was set to reign for a further 34. Without financial acumen of any kind, a series of Royal Regents ruled in his stead for much of his reign. During the Japanese invasion, the seventy-seven year old Sultan fled into the jungles on the back of one of his eighteen sons. One of these was to become the first Prime Minister of the Malaya and Commonwealth and world-famous statesman, Tunku 'Abdu'l Rahman. Others were distinguished diplomats, civil servants and military officers. Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din's grandson, Sultan al-Mu'tasimu Billah Muhib ud-din Alhaj 'Abdu'l Halim Mu'azzam Shah, ascended the throne in 1958 and served as King of the Federation from 1970 to 1975.

Does anyone know of Tunku Ahmad Tunku Yahaya of the Kedah Royal Family lineage? Does he have any other children besides Tunku Jamil Tunku Ahmad? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi..
ReplyDeletewhy dont you do a research regarding kedah royal family, started from Sultan Abdul Hamid ibni Al mahrum sultan abd halim shah.
Hi..
ReplyDeleteYup, i still doing the research regarding the Kedah Royal Family. Currently i am facing the two history section of Kedah. First, Kedah is a hindu kingdom in the past.. and second is the Siamese Kedah pasai Ma, which claim that the Sultanate is a Muslim Sultanate since its foundation.
The more I dig, the more complicated it become...
Sila ambil perhatian, ada lelaki berusia lingkungan 30an mengaku anak kepada Tunku Annuar dengan gelaran ADIK
ReplyDeleteAssalammualaikum Tengku Abd.Hamid Thani..kita pernah berkawan semasa di hostel Sultan Abd.Hamid Colleg e.Form 5 1969..and we both have something to remember..going back to istana anak bukit to make phone call.Semoga Tengku sihat sejahtera.
ReplyDeleteHi, just need some answers. The 2nd wife of Sultan Abdul Halim - Sultanah Haminah, has she any children by him? I see there is no mention of it anywhere.
ReplyDelete@Mers
ReplyDeleteNo. By two of his marriage, Sultan Abdul Halim only produce an only daughter, Tunku Intan Shafinaz by Sultanah Bahiyah.
Sultan Abdul Halim doesn't have any child by his marriage to Sultanah Haminah.
Tunku Johanez is the elder brother to Tunku Azudin Shah.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore the line of succession is correct when Tunku Bendahara assumes the throne. As it is, your line of succession is not accurate.
It should be Tuanku Raja Muda Kedah, Tunku Bendahara Kedah, Tunku Temenggong Kedah and then Tunku Laksmana Kedah as the more accurate line of succession .

ReplyDeletePlease reply if you see this message as soon as possible.
I have corrected the position of Tunku Azudin Shah and Tunku Johanez.. but regarding the line of succession..
are you talking about the line of succession or the order of precedence??
because, according to the line of succession.. it is the son of Tunku Bendahara who shall inherit first.
While the order of precedence is as you said, Raja Muda, Tunku Bendahara, Tunku Temenggong and Tunku Laksamana, based on seniority. But, in Kedah.. senior member of the royal family does not inherit first if the reigning Sultan has a son. Am I correct??
I am talking about the line of succession as it stands now. You are correct only when the Tunku Bendahara assumes the throne but until then the line of succession is the Raja Muda, the Tunku Bendahara , the Tunku Temenggong then the Tunku Laksmana.
ReplyDeleteThe eldest son (nor his brothers) of the Tunku Bendahara is not more senior than his uncles Tunku Temenggong and Tunku Laksmana. The sons of Tunku Temenggong are not more senior than their uncle Tunku Laksmana.
If the first reigning Sultan has a son, he stands to inherit the throne but only if the Sultan himself has named hin as the successor and it has been passed or agreed by the Royal Council. However , this is very much subjected to the State Constitution of Kedah which I regret am not familiar with .
The State constitution stated that
ReplyDeletePlease differentiate the order of succession and the order of precedence. Under the order of precedence, yes.. Tunku Temenggong and Tunku Laksamana is more senior than Tunku Putra Badlishah, Tunku Johanez and Tunku Kudin (they are the Sultan's brother after all).
But, under the line of succession, the possibility of Tunku Putra Badlishah, Tunku Johanez and Tunku Kudin will inherit first is high.
"The then Sultan, Ahmad Taj ud-din III al-Mukarram Shah, had already reigned for 27 years and was set to reign for a further 34. Without financial acumen of any kind, a series of Royal Regents ruled in his stead for much of his reign"
ReplyDeleteI believe this refers to Sultan Abdul Hamid.. grandfather of current Sultan Abdul Halim...
Bless you, Sultan.
ReplyDeletehi there is a guy i met named haji naim? said him self the son of sultan is dis true? he is staying in instana bukit n very famous for few bad stories in kedah
ReplyDeleteActually Sultan Abdul Halim had another daughter. I heard about it. She staying in Kuala Muda.
ReplyDeleteTo both anonymous above.. His Majesty Tuanku Abd Halim only have a daughter, Tunku Intan Shafinaz and another two adopted daughters, Tunku Sarina and Tunku Soraya. It has been confirmed in the exhibition of Pameran Raja Kita held at the old National Palace.
ReplyDeleteWhether His Majesty had a son or another daughter is a false rumours. Do not believe them.
Thanks so much for this! I used to live in Alor Setar and met quite a few members of Kedah royalty. In fact, my neighbours were the family of the late Tunku Daud. Your blog brought back some very happy memories. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteSorry to bring this up. Back in 1974 there was a Year 6 trasferred student at SK St. John KL name by Tunku Mohd Naim & was known as the King's son to the school. Sultan Abd. Halim was the King frpm 1790-1975. He must 51 yo this year. Wallahualam hu bissawab.
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope this things should not be brought up. If really His Majesty had a son, why should he hide it? And there should be a research made to prove the claim.
ReplyDeletefor example, the kid's mother. Who is she? His son with whom? Invisible wife?
Did you come across the name Engku Wan Jah who was one of the aunties ( (mak saudara) of Tunku Abdul Rahman?Did you come across

Tengku Kudin mempunyai 3 orang putera iaitu :-
Tunku Muhammad Bahadur Shah
Tunku Hj Adnan
Tunku Haidar Ali Shah
Datuk anda Tunku Ahmad bin apa? Sebab anak daripada Tunku Bahadur adalah Tunku Sulaiman dan Tunku Yahaya, sementara anak daripada Tunku Haidar adalah Tunku Daud, Tunku Yahya dan Tunku Awang.
Tidak diketahui anak dari Tunku Adnan.
